Grapes
Sparkling whites and rosés, from crisp and citrusy to richer, toasty styles.
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier dominate. They can be blended or bottled separately.
Bottle fermentation creates the bubbles; ageing on the yeast can add bread, biscuit and creamy notes. Brut is usually dry; demi-sec is sweeter.
Blanc de blancs uses white grapes, usually Chardonnay. Blanc de noirs uses Pinot Noir, Meunier or both.
Both are white sparkling wines. These names describe the grapes, rather than a separate growing area.
Pinot Noir and Meunier supply colour, sometimes alongside Chardonnay.
Often red-berry scented. Rosé can be made by blending white and red base wines, or by brief skin contact.
