Melissa pairs Gaglioppo reds with Greco Bianco whites in the hills around Calabria’s Ionian side.
Gaglioppo.
Red-fruit and savoury notes with firm structure; permitted blending grapes and ageing affect the finish.
Greco Bianco.
Orchard fruit and fresh acidity with a rounded palate; this is a representative leading-grape expression.
Melissa is its own DOC, although its vineyard landscape neighbours and partly overlaps other Crotone origins. Gaglioppo is central to the reds and Greco Bianco to the whites, with other grapes permitted within the blends. Compare the producer and ageing mention for differences in body and maturity. A wine from the town of Melissa does not automatically carry this designation.
