About Mátra

White and aromatic wines

Fresh citrus and stone fruit lead the whites; Muscat styles add floral perfume. Superior whites have riper fruit and a longer finish.

Red wines

Red

Kékfrankos, Cabernet franc, Pinot noir

Red and dark berries with supple texture; Superior reds add mature fruit and ageing notes.

Rosé and siller

Rosé

Kékfrankos, Merlot

Rosé is bright and berry-led; siller has a deeper red hue and cherry character.

Late-harvest wines

Concentrated late-harvest wines can be white or red, with rich texture and often residual sweetness.

Aerated semi-sparkling wines

Sparkling

Lightly fizzy white, rosé and red wines made with added carbon dioxide.

Where it grows: The southern Mátra foothills around Gyöngyös, with outlying areas towards the Danube and Budapest.

Its designated area includes thirty-five municipalities and Budapest-Rákosliget. Olasz rizling, Sauvignon and aromatic varieties join red grapes such as Kékfrankos, while Superior and late-harvest categories broaden the range.
