About Bierzo DO

Where it grows: In the sheltered Bierzo basin of northwestern León province, around Ponferrada, Cacabelos and Villafranca del Bierzo.

Bierzo Mencía

Red cherry, flowers and herbs with fresh acidity and fine to firm tannins.

Bierzo Godello

Citrus and orchard fruit with a dry, textured palate; lees or barrel ageing can add breadth.

Bierzo’s vineyards range from valley soils to slate- and quartz-bearing slopes. Atlantic influence and inland conditions meet here, giving a setting distinct from the central Duero plateau. Mencía is the natural starting point for reds; Godello provides a white counterpart. Village and smaller-origin wording can make the vineyard story more precise. The name of a slate slope describes its geology, without guaranteeing one particular flavour in the glass.
