Pfalz wines bring generous fruit and vineyard variety to southwestern Germany’s German Wine Route. Riesling is a rewarding first choice, from fresh dry whites to layered single-site bottles; Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder add contrasting textures and colours. The vineyard belt follows the eastern edge of the Haardt and Palatinate Forest, with sandstone, limestone, loess and other soils appearing in different villages and sites. Explore Forst’s famous Riesling slopes, Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg, the northern villages around Bad Dürkheim, or Siebeldingen in the southern Pfalz. Village and vineyard names make the region more specific. VDP classification is a growers’ system within Pfalz, and Grosses Gewächs denotes its dry classified-site wines; sweetness wording remains useful elsewhere.
