Elevation, aspect and soils vary markedly across this registered region, from valley country to higher slopes. Cool nights and the risk of late frost influence growing decisions, while summer rain adds another seasonal variable. Chardonnay, Riesling and Shiraz provide a useful introduction. Growers also explore grapes such as Gewurztraminer, Tempranillo and Nebbiolo. The full name New England Australia identifies this GI rather than the American region of the same shorter name.
