English PDO connects certified grape origin with a broad range of still and sparkling wines grown in England.
Citrus, flowers and herbal notes with an aromatic, fresh palate.
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier are representative grapes; blends vary.
Citrus, apple and lees-derived bread notes with fine bubbles; sweetness depends on the label.
English is a protected designation of origin, rather than a single grape or a synonym for sparkling wine. Its scheme covers still and sparkling categories under their respective specifications. Bacchus gives an aromatic still-white introduction, while Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier are familiar sparkling grapes. Certification concerns the stated origin and production requirements; a county name or vineyard provides closer geographical context. Read the wine type and sweetness term alongside the protected designation.
