Quinta de Saes is a historic family-owned estate in Portugal’s Dão region near Vila Nova de Tazém, operated by Álvaro de Castro and his daughter Maria Castro. Inherited by Álvaro in 1980, the estate was revived and released its first bottling in 1989. The vineyards, on well-drained granitic soils with clay-sand layers at around 500m elevation, are farmed sustainably without irrigation, using organic-type soil management but no formal certification. Quinta de Saes focuses on indigenous Portuguese varieties including Touriga Nacional, Jaen, Alfrocheiro, and Tinta Roriz. Winemaking reflects a family-led, small-scale approach shaped by Álvaro’s long stewardship and Maria’s biotechnology training and Bordeaux experience.
