URLAR is a boutique, single-vineyard producer in Gladstone, Wairarapa, founded and owned by Angus and Davina Thomson. The 31-hectare estate is BioGro-certified organic and farmed biodynamically, with composting, liquid manures, inter-row crop rotation, wildflower strips and a biodynamic calendar supporting soil health and biodiversity. Economic and environmental sustainability are central to the estate’s approach. The name URLAR, meaning “of the Earth” in Scottish Gaelic, reflects its focus on expressing the character of its ancient, free-draining soils. Wines are handcrafted from certified grapes, with winemaking overseen by Jannine Rickards, and are presented through the estate winery and cellar door.
