Quinta Várzea da Pedra is a fourth-generation Emídio family estate in Bombarral, within Lisboa’s DOC Óbidos. Owned and operated by brothers Tomás and Alberto Emídio, the estate has been in the family since 1910, with bottled wines introduced by the new generation in 2015. Its vineyards benefit from Atlantic influence, Óbidos Lagoon and Montejunto, with red clay and limestone soils contributing freshness, salinity and acidity. Viticulture is chemical-free organic, though non-certified, with no irrigation or herbicides, manual harvesting and low yields. In the cellar, grapes are foot-crushed and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, while naturally high acidity and low pH allow reduced sulfur use. The wines combine indigenous and international varieties in an artisanal, sustainable expression of Óbidos.
