Escarpment is a family-run boutique winery in Martinborough, Wairarapa, founded as a joint venture in 1999 by Robert and Mem Kirby with Larry and Sue McKenna. Its vineyards lie on a steep slope of ancient alluvial gravel terraces, where the Kupe, Te Rehua and Kiwa sites produce layered, complex Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir is the focus, alongside Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Rosé. The winery seeks to express the natural balance, regional structure and fruit character of its land. Larry McKenna leads the winemaking team, with Tim Bourne overseeing production and Rowan Hoskins managing viticulture, supported by a community-focused approach.
