Botanica is a Western Cape producer owned by Virginia "Ginny" Povall, a Massachusetts native who bought the Protea Heights farm in Stellenbosch in 2008. The winery sources grapes from emerging South African regions, including old bush vines grown at high altitude. These vineyards are dry-farmed and low-yielding. Winemaking is hands-on, with hand-harvesting, native yeast fermentation split between tank and barrel, followed by aging in stainless steel and oak and six months on the lees. No formal sustainability certifications are noted.
