Founded in 1870, Balthasar Ress is a fifth-generation, family-owned VDP estate in Hattenheim, Rheingau, led by owner and winemaker Christian Ress. Its certified organic viticulture (DE-ÖKO-039) emphasizes sustainable vineyard management and the development of healthy, self-regulating ecosystems without chemical herbicides or pesticides. The estate draws on Rheingau sites from Hattenheim to Assmannshausen, including classified VDP.GROSSE LAGE and VDP.ERSTE LAGE vineyards, with Riesling at the centre of its range alongside Pinot Noir. Its wines are intended to reflect their soils, microclimate and the estate’s philosophy, with higher-tier cuvées made through minimal intervention, spontaneous fermentation and extended lees ageing for complexity and ageing potential. The winery also maintains a distinctive vineyard on Sylt.
