South Africa

Theuniskraal is a historic, family-owned estate in Tulbagh’s Winterhoek Valley, Western Cape, where the Jordaan family has maintained a winemaking tradition across generations. Bought by the family in 1927 and established as a wine estate in 1948, it is recognized as South Africa’s first white-wine estate. Its first Cape Riesling won gold at the Commonwealth Wine Show in London in 1950. Surrounded by the Witzenberg, Obiqua, and Winterhoek mountains, the vineyards benefit from cool, protected conditions, mountain breezes, and stony, sandy-loam soils. The family philosophy centres on simplicity, balance, respect for the land, and the belief that great wine is made in the vineyard. The estate produces both white and red wines reflecting Tulbagh’s terroir.
