Domaine Sainte Barbe

Domaine Sainte Barbe is a family-owned estate in Viré in Burgundy’s Mâconnais, led by third-generation winemaker Jean-Marie Chaland. Founded in 2000, the domaine farms parcels across Viré, Montbellet and Burgy, on marl, limestone and clay-limestone soils, with many older vines. The vineyards have been worked without synthetic herbicides since 1967 and the estate was later certified organic. Farming emphasizes massale selection for genetic diversity, and the cellar follows indigenous-yeast, minimal-intervention methods. Harvesting is done by hand, and the estate produces Chardonnay alongside Gamay and Pinot Noir, with a range that includes still and sparkling wines. Jean-Marie’s experience in Champagne, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Australia, along with Ewelina’s vineyard work since the 2000 vintage, shapes the domaine’s hands-on, artisanal approach.
