Domaine Berthenet

France

Domaine Berthenet is a family-owned estate in Montagny, in Burgundy’s Côte Chalonnaise, run by Jean-Pierre Berthenet and his son François. With roots in Montagny stretching back centuries and an estate founded in 1974, the family farms Chardonnay across marno-calcaires and argilo-calcaires slopes. The domaine was the village’s first to adopt sustainable viticulture, limiting chemical inputs and using copper and sulfur only when necessary; it is not formally certified organic or biodynamic. Careful monitoring, sorting and gentle harvesting support an artisanal approach, while massal selection from the family’s own nursery is used on most plots. Jean-Pierre and François tailor each cuvée’s élevage to express its terroir, using indigenous yeasts, stainless steel and oak, followed by lees aging and malolactic fermentation.
