Decugnano dei Barbi

Italy

Decugnano dei Barbi is a historic estate in Umbria, between Orvieto and Todi, with documented origins dating to 1212. Claudio Barbi acquired the abandoned property in 1973, replanted the vineyards and built the winery; his son Enzo continues the work today. The estate’s vineyards lie on distinctive Pliocene marine soils, rich in sand, clay, calcium and marine fossils, giving the wines notable minerality, freshness and ageing potential. Sustainable and organic cultivation avoids chemical products and prioritizes biodiversity. Decugnano produced Umbria’s first Metodo Classico in 1978, while Claudio’s 1981 decision to vinify botrytised grapes separately led to Pourriture Noble. The wines reflect long-term study of the terroir, careful experimentation and a deep connection to Orvieto.
