Cascina Val del Prete

Italy

Cascina Val del Prete is a family-owned estate in Priocca, on the northwestern edge of Roero in Piedmont. Purchased by Bartolomeo Roagna in 1977, it is now run by his son Mario, wife Maria Carla, and grandson Giovanni. The family farms vineyards in the Madonna delle Grazie and Cascinotto areas, where clay- and limestone-rich soils give the wines notable structure. Since 1995, the vineyards have been managed through natural agriculture, with year-round cover crops, careful soil management, manure used sparingly, and manual harvesting with cluster selection. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2013, with biodynamic practices also noted. Winemaking is non-interventionist, relying mainly on indigenous yeasts, extended maceration, and maturation in wood—from several months for earlier-drinking wines to three years for Roero Riserva.
