J. Hofstätter is a family-owned winery in Tramin, Alto Adige, founded in 1907 by Josef Hofstätter and still controlled by the Hofstätter and Oberhofer families. It is noted as the only family-owned estate in Alto Adige with vineyards on both sides of the Adige River. The estate has a long pioneering streak: Konrad Oberhofer advanced quality-focused bottlings by origin, and the winery was an early force behind Alto Adige’s Vigna single-vineyard classification, emphasizing separate vinification to express each site’s geology, soils, microclimate, and altitude. Its roots are especially strong in Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer, with vineyards also extending into high-altitude Trentino and, since 2014, the Mosel through Dr. Fischer for slate-grown Riesling. Vineyard work includes cover crops, gentle pruning, composting, and organic fertilization, alongside ongoing practical sustainability measures and a balance of historic cellar tradition with modern winemaking.
